Quality Twin Mattresses in Southern California

Guest rooms, dorms, children’s bedrooms, even RVs — twin mattresses are a great fit for almost any space. Measuring 35 inches wide by 75 inches long, a twin mattress is the smallest standard mattress, but it still comfortably accommodates children and average-size adults. Plus, it’s easy to care for a twin because this lightweight mattress is a breeze to turn or rotate every few months. So it’s no surprise that a twin size mattress is one of the most popular picks on the market, and one that you should consider when you’re shopping for a new mattress.

Benefits of Twin Mattresses

Twin mattresses are versatile. They can be used either with or without box springs, which means they’ll work well with trundle beds, day beds, hideaways and specially designed children’s beds. When used with bunk beds, twin mattresses effectively double a small room’s sleeping capacity.

Some young children may find sleeping in a large bed lonely and even frightening. Twin mattresses, however, tend to give children secure, bedtime “tucked in” feelings that will help them sleep restfully throughout the night.

It should also be noted that a twin bed mattress typically costs less than all other sizes on the market, and the sheets and blankets cost less as well. If you’re looking for an affordable option to put in a kid’s room, guest room, or rental property, a twin bed mattress will prove perfectly functional without breaking the bank.

Two Categories of Twin Mattresses

Although they’re the same width as standard twins, most manufacturers also offer twin mattresses in a twin XL size, which are a full five inches longer. At 80 inches long, twin XL mattresses are the same length as queen or king mattresses. Two twin XL mattresses placed side by side are exactly the same width and length and provide a sleeping surface identical to that of a king mattress.

A twin XL has plenty of room for a young child to grow, and taller than average adults can also sleep comfortably on a twin XL. Because of their compact size and versatility, twin XL mattresses are frequently found in student housing facilities and college dormitories. For these same reasons, they also fit well in a guest room or any small sleeping space.

Twin Mattress Comfort Levels

Sleeping on the right mattress is essential for getting a good night’s rest. Items to consider when shopping for a new twin mattress include the sleeper’s age, body weight, history of back pain, neck pain or allergies and usual sleeping position. As with other standard mattress sizes, twin and twin XL mattresses come in four comfort levels ranging from firm to ultra-plush.

Firm mattresses provide the most support, which is why people with back or neck problems tend to prefer them to softer mattresses. Firm mattresses help keep the spine correctly aligned, improve sleeping posture and relax the back muscles, all of which combine to alleviate neck and lower back pain. When shopping for a new twin mattress, however, avoid mattresses that are overly firm, since they might actually aggravate an existing back or neck problem.

Stomach sleepers tend to choose firm mattresses for the full body support they offer. Firm mattresses can also help people with circulatory problems, since they more evenly distribute the sleeper’s weight than softer mattresses, which results in improved blood flow.

Cushion firm mattresses are essentially firm mattresses topped with a soft, pillow-like material. Sometimes also called “pillow top” mattresses, they’re slightly softer than firm mattresses, and are preferred by people who need some support but find firm mattresses uncomfortable. Many people find that cushion firm mattresses offer an ideal blend of comfort, softness and support.

Plush mattresses combine the best features of firm and cushion firm mattresses. The cushioned top layer conforms comfortably to the body’s natural contours, while still providing enough support to relieve pressure on the back, shoulders and arms, which helps ensure a good night’s rest. People who sleep on their backs or sides often prefer plush mattresses, although stomach sleepers may find they need more spinal support than a plush mattress offers.

Ultra plush mattresses offer just the right balance of softness and support for the ultimate in sleeping comfort. Sometimes also called “Super Soft”, “Super Plush” or “Extra Plush”, ultra plush mattresses are the most luxurious mattress type available. People who normally sleep on their sides or are “toss and turn” sleepers prefer ultra-plush mattresses because they keep the spine aligned while gently cushioning the hips and shoulders. Stomach sleepers, however, tend to prefer firmer mattresses that provide enough support to keep the spine from sagging.

Everyone sleeps differently. While we’ve described how most sleepers react to each type of mattress, we can’t claim that these reactions are universal. Twin Mattress Construction Types

Twin mattresses, as with other size mattresses, are available in four basic construction types, which are memory foam, latex, innerspring and hybrid.

Memory Foam Mattresses are constructed from a viscous polyurethane foam that shapes itself naturally to the body’s contours. Memory foam helps relieve  morning aches and pains by evenly distributing the sleeper’s weight and providing pressure-relieving, full body support. This material is a great choice for a twin bed mattress because it helps to "hold,” the sleeper in place, compensating for the relatively small size of the bed.

Latex Mattresses fend off microorganisms, and are hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant, which make them an excellent choice for people with allergies or respiratory problems. Latex also “breathes”, which helps wick away body moisture. Made from either natural or synthetic rubber, latex mattresses will usually outlast memory foam mattresses. As kids commonly sleep in twin-sized beds, using a latex mattress is a great way to avoid irritating allergies or asthma.

Innerspring Mattresses are made of a series of steel coils covered with padding, fiber, foam or a top layer of smaller steel springs. The more coils an innerspring mattress contains, the greater amount of support it offers. These mattresses offer plenty of support for a good night’s sleep and yet they tend to cost less than the alternatives, which is good to know for anyone who wants a great bed on a budget.

Hybrid Mattresses are basically innerspring mattresses cushioned with layers of memory foam, latex or similar materials. They’re best known for their uniform body support and soothing pressure point relief. Hybrid mattresses are great in guest rooms with a twin bed mattress because even though the bed is relatively small it offers a luxury sleeping experience. No guest is going to complain.

Best Twin Mattress Accessories – There’s more to replacing a twin mattress than just choosing a comfort level and brand. You’ll still need a pillow, mattress and pillow protectors, along with sheets, pillowcases and shams. Since you spend a third of your life in bed, it needs to be a comfortable place not just to sleep, but to also watch TV, read and perhaps work from time to time. Adding nightstands for holding reading lamps, a television stand for a TV and DVR and a mirror placed atop a chest of drawers for storage space, and you’ll have bedroom that’s been transformed into your personalized refuge from the outside world.

How Twin Mattresses Differ in Size – Twin mattresses are available in three sizes, which are youth size, standard size and extra long or XL, although there is very little demand for youth sized mattresses. Standard twin mattresses have plenty of sleeping room for a child or average size adult. Taller and still growing children and adults may find standard twin mattresses too short for sound sleeping, and will probably find a twin XL or extra long mattress to be more comfortable.
