Serta has a history of innovations. The company was founded in 1933 by a group of several independent mattress manufacturers who consolidated their operations into a single brand. Since that time, Serta has produced many mattresses that have raised the bar for the mattress and sleep system industry, including the world’s first-ever tuftless mattress.

Some other groundbreaking Serta "firsts" include:

  • 2011: Serta introduced the iComfort Sleep System, with there revolutionary Cool Action™ Gel Memory Foam. It’s the world’s first memory foam infused with Serta’s proprietary MicroSupport® gel for better support and a cooling touch.
  • 2013: Serta added gel memory foam technology to its innerspring mattresses. That was the same year the company expanded its line of iComfort gel memory foam mattresses and unveiled new technologies designed to balance and improve sleeper comfort, support and temperature regulation.
  • 2014: Serta launched its iComfort series mattresses that feature Cool Action Dual Effects gel memory foam.

Choosing the Right Serta Mattress for Your Unique Sleeping Requirements

Here are the three types of support systems that are available for Serta mattresses:

  • Innerspring Mattresses. This is the most popular type of mattress on the market today. An innerspring mattress system features a series of steel coil supports, along with various layers of foams and fibers on top to enhance surface comfort. Higher coil counts mean greater support, so avoid innerspring mattresses with low coil counts. As a rule of thumb, here are the minimum recommended number of coils for standard size mattress:
    • Twin and Full Size Mattress – 300 coils
    • Queen Size Mattresses – 375 coils
    • King Size Mattresses – 450 coils
  • Memory Foam Mattresses. A memory foam mattress system features an all-foam support core, which is made from a polyurethane originally developed by NASA that softens from the sleeper’s body heat and molds to the body’s natural contours. Memory Foam mattresses offer exceptional support and comfort by evenly distributing the weight of the sleeper’s body, which helps relieve pressure on the back, neck, shoulders and spine. They absorb motion, so nocturnal turning and tossing won’t disturb a sleeping partner. Memory foam mattresses are also resistant to mites, mold, bedbugs and allergens, which make them a great choice for people who suffer from asthma or allergies. All Serta memory foam mattresses include a top layer that consists of memory foam, comfort foams and fibers.
  • Memory Foam Hybrid Mattresses. This is a mattress system that combines the best features of an innerspring mattress with a memory foam mattress. The result is the firmness and support of a traditional steel coil innerspring system with memory foam added for comfort. Most of today’s hybrid mattresses have individual pocket coil springs wrapped in a fabric sleeve which helps reduce both spring noise and motion transfer. Although they contain less foam than a true memory foam mattress, the added layer or layers of memory foam in memory foam hybrids add a touch of cushiony softness and comfort. Many people consider memory foam hybrid mattresses to be the best of both worlds.

Serta mattresses are available in the following four levels of firmness:

  • Firm. Firm Mattresses offer maximum body support, and are often the choice of people with back and neck problems because they help relax the lower back muscles and keep the spine properly aligned. As with all mattress comfort levels, it’s important to stop by one of Sit ‘n SleepSit ‘n Sleeps 38 conveniently located sleep centers and spend a few minutes to lie down and test a mattress before buying, since a mattresses that’s overly firm can sometimes aggravate or even cause back pain.
  • Plush. A Plush mattress has a soft, cushioned upper layer that conforms to the body’s natural contours. Plush mattresses offer just enough support to relieve pressure on the back, neck, arms and shoulders. People who sleep on their backs or sides often chosen them. Stomach sleepers, however, may find they need more spinal support than a plush mattresses will provide.
  • Pillow Top. Pillow top mattresses are most often innerspring mattresses with a thick memory foam or other type of foam, latex, wool or cotton padding sewn into the top, as opposed to ordinary mattresses that have minimal to moderate padding. They’re primarily available in medium or soft support levels. Some pillow top mattresses look as if they’re integrated into the body of the mattress, while others appear to be simply lying on top. Many back and side sleepers prefer them, while people who sleep on their stomachs may find that they sink too far into the body of the mattress, which can cause improper neck alignment and make breathing more difficult.
  • Euro Top. Euro top mattresses are very similar to pillow top mattresses, although a pillow top has a uniform cushiony and firm feeling throughout, as opposed to Euro top mattresses, which are soft at the center and firm at the edges. Euro top mattresses are generally more durable than pillow top mattresses, which gradually lose their pillow-like properties and become flat. There’s very little difference in the cost of pillow top and Euro top mattresses.

Finding the right combination of mattress firmness and support ensures you can get the comfort and support you need to enjoy restful sleep night after night.
