Mattress Size Guide: Where Do You Fit?
When it comes to mattresses, size matters. There is no such thing as a one size fits all. People come in different shapes and sizes, which is why each of Sit ‘n Sleep’s retail outlets located throughout Southern California carry name brand mattresses in all standard mattress sizes ranging from Twin to California King.
When shopping for a new mattress, start by eliminating choices that are obviously too short and will leave legs dangling over the end. Another factor to consider is whether the mattress will have enough room for both you and your partner to rest comfortably in your preferred sleeping positions.
Knowing the size of the room where the mattress will be located is also important, since the bed must fit without overwhelming the surroundings and still leave space for a dresser, bedside table or tables and other bedroom accessories. If the mattress is for a school aged child, be sure it his long enough for him or her to enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep without outgrowing it within a year or two.
Just as each sleeper is unique, every sleeping situation has different requirements. Below is some general information to help determine which size mattress will best suit your needs:
Twin Mattresses
Measuring approximately 38 inches wide by 75 inches long, Twin Mattresses are the smallest of all standard mattress sizes. Although small, twin mattresses, which are sometimes called single mattresses, still have plenty of room for a school-aged child or small adult to sleep comfortably
Because Twin mattresses can optionally be used with or without box springs, they’re suitable for use with trundle beds, bunk beds, day beds and hideaways. Their size make twin mattresses especially suited for smaller rooms, and when it’s time to rotate them every few months, their small size and light weight make the task much easier. Two twin beds can also be pushed together to create a sleeping platform with approximately the same dimensions as a king size bed.
Twin XL Mattresses
Although the same width as a standard twin mattress, Twin XL Mattresses are a full five inches longer, which will provide plenty of growing room for a young child. Because of their extra length, the Twin XL mattress size can also easily accommodate a taller than average sized adult. Often found in school dormitories, their compact size make the Twin XL a good choice for smaller bedrooms.
Full Mattresses
A Full Size Mattress, sometimes also referred to as a Double Mattress, is a great choice for someone wanting a mattress larger than a twin, but doesn’t need the extra sleeping space of a king or queen. Measuring 53” by 75”, Full Mattresses are the same length as a standard twin mattress, but are fifteen inches wider. Although it’s possible for two average-size people to sleep on a full mattress, keep in mind that it only has a sleeping area of just over two feet for each person. Slightly more than six feet in length, Full Mattresses may not be suitable for very tall people, but they are a great option for those still-growing children who tend to spread out when sleeping. Full size mattresses are also a good alternative for bedrooms measuring 9.5 feet by 10.5 feet or larger.
Full XL Mattresses
As with Twin mattresses, Full mattresses are also available in a longer version for taller people. Having the same 53 inch width as a Full mattress, the Full XL Mattress is five inches longer. The Full XL is a good choice for taller sleepers who don’t require the space a Queen mattress offers, but want something with more room than a Twin or Twin XL.
Queen Mattresses
By far the most popular of all mattresses sizes available today, Queen Size Mattresses have plenty of room to easily allow one or two people to sleep in comfort. With a footprint of 60” wide by 80” long, a Queen Mattress take up only slightly more room than a Full mattresses, and will easily fit in any bedroom measuring 10’ by 10’ or larger without taking up too much floor space. Because Queen Mattresses will comfortably accommodate either one or two children or adults, a Queen makes an excellent choice for furnishing a guest room.
King Mattresses
Wider than a Queen Mattress by 16 inches, King Size Mattresses, which are also referred to as Eastern King Mattresses, have plenty of room for even larger bodied sleepers and those people who prefer to spread out when they sleep. Measuring 76” by 80”, two people will each have as much personal space as if sleeping on a Twin XL bed. King size bed and mattress sets are recommended for rooms measuring 10’ by 12.5’ or larger.
California King Mattresses
Four inches narrower than a standard King Mattress, the California King Mattress is also four inches longer than the standard King. Sometimes called a Western Mattress, the California King is a great choice for taller couples who need the extra length. Whenever a mattress’s length is more important than its width, a California King is the right selection.
