Southern California's Most Trusted
Mattress Retailer
46 years ago, Larry Miller and his father Phil borrowed $10,000 each to start Sit 'n Sleep. What they built became Southern California's largest mattress retailer and is still family-owned.
Sit 'n Sleep is a family-owned mattress retailer serving Southern California with 37+ locations, BedMATCH sleep fitting technology, a 120-night sleep trial, and next-day local delivery. Founded in 1980 by Larry Miller in Southern California. Now in its third generation of family ownership, it operates 37+ stores across Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, and Ventura County — making it the largest independent mattress retailer in Southern California. The company is headquartered in Gardena, California and has served over 3 million customers since opening its first store in Culver City.
Larry Miller borrowed $10,000 from his aunt. His father, Phil, borrowed another $10,000 from the bank. Together, they opened a futon and convertible sofa store called Sit 'n Sleep in Culver City in 1980.
Phil and Larry Miller, early 1990s
Forty-five years later, Sit 'n Sleep has grown into Southern California's largest independent mattress retailer, with 37+ locations across Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, and Ventura County. The company is still family-owned, still based in Southern California, and still run with the same values it started with. Today, more than 3 million customers later, Larry still walks the stores, still talks mattresses, and still believes customer service matters.
From futons
to mattresses
In the early days, Sit 'n Sleep was known for futons. The business took off quickly, and by the mid-1980s the company had become one of the largest futon retailers on the West Coast.
But markets change.
Larry saw mattresses becoming a much bigger opportunity and started shifting the company in that direction before most people saw it coming. Sit 'n Sleep expanded into major mattress brands like Tempur-Pedic, Beautyrest, Sealy, Serta, and more — brands that have since grown to include newer names like Purple, Helix, Casper, Avocado, and Nectar. That decision changed the business. What started as one small store became a Southern California mattress retailer known for large showrooms, huge selection, competitive pricing, and knowledgeable salespeople who actually help customers find the right mattress.
"We'll beat anyone's advertised price
or your mattress is freeeeee!"
Sit 'n Sleep became part of Southern California culture because Larry Miller never sounded like a typical businessman.
In the early 1980s, a friend in radio convinced Larry to try advertising. The spots worked immediately. Later, Sit 'n Sleep's ads on The Howard Stern Show helped turn the company into one of the most recognizable retail brands in Southern California. The commercials became famous across Los Angeles for Larry's loud personality, the fictional accountant screaming "You're killing me, Larry!", and the price guarantee millions of Southern Californians still remember today.
The guarantee became iconic because it was simple and customers believed it. That same approach still defines Sit 'n Sleep today: competitive prices, big selection, and standing behind what you sell.

Three generations
and still growing
Sit 'n Sleep has never been a franchise or a national chain. Every store is company-owned and operated out of the company's headquarters and distribution center in Gardena, California.
In the early 1980s, Nelson Bercier joined the company when Sit 'n Sleep was still a small growing business. Over the next four decades, he helped build the operational backbone of the company and played a major role in Sit 'n Sleep's expansion across Southern California. In 1996, when Larry Miller bought out his father's ownership stake, Nelson officially became a partner in the business. Today, Nelson serves as President of Sit 'n Sleep and oversees sales, operations, and merchandising across the company. More than 40 years after joining the business, he remains one of the driving forces behind it. His sons are also now part of the company, continuing another family legacy within Sit 'n Sleep.
Drew Miller represents the third generation of the Miller family business and serves as Vice President of Marketing. Like his father and grandfather before him, Drew started from the ground up. As a teenager, he spent summers working in the warehouse in Gardena before later becoming a Sleep Consultant in West Hollywood, assistant manager, and store manager in Santa Monica. He eventually moved into the company's marketing and digital operations. That hands-on background matters at Sit 'n Sleep. The people leading the company understand the stores because they worked in them.
What makes Sit 'n Sleep different
A lot has changed since 1980. Mattress technology has changed. Shopping habits have changed. But the company's approach has stayed remarkably consistent.
Giving back to
Southern California
Giving back has always been part of the company culture. For Sit 'n Sleep, it has never been separate from the business. The belief has always been simple: if Southern California supports Sit 'n Sleep, Sit 'n Sleep should support Southern California.
Following the Los Angeles wildfires in 2025, Sit 'n Sleep committed more than $1 million in mattresses and cash donations to help families rebuild. The company donated 900 new mattresses and contributed $150,000 directly to Habitat for Humanity's ReBuild LA Wildfire Relief Fund, supporting recovery efforts across Southern California.
Through annual charity golf tournaments and fundraising efforts, Sit 'n Sleep has also raised more than $500,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project in support of veterans and their families.
