Types Of Bed Sheets

There are two basic types of sheets for beds, which are fitted and flat. A fitted bed sheet goes directly on top of the mattress and mattress protector, and is held in place by the elastic bands sewn into each of the sheet’s four fitted corners. The matching flat sheet is placed on top of the fitted sheet and is tucked in at both the foot of the bed and part way up the sides, making it easy to fold the sheet back at the top. Not too long ago, sheets were made primarily from woven cotton, linen or silk. Today, however, bed sheets and pillowcases are constructed from a variety of natural and synthetic materials, including satin, rayon, bamboo fiber and polypropylene. The quality of a bed sheet is usually expressed in terms of thread count, which is the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch of material. Usually, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheet’s feel and the longer it can be expected to last. Good quality bed sheet thread counts range from 200 to 800, although some high end, luxury bed sheets have thread counts of 1,000 or more.

Shopping For Bed Sheets

Choosing the right bed sheets from among the myriad of styles, sizes, designs and colors available can be frustrating and confusing. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when shopping for new bed sheets: There is no such thing as One Size Fits All when it comes to bed sheets. As obvious as it may seem, people sometimes become so preoccupied with color and design that they forget to check the size, which results in the inconvenience of returning to the seller to exchange them for the correct size. Pay close attention to the materials. Synthetic materials such as satin, rayon or polypropylene may feel smoother to the touch, but they tend to retain heat and moisture. Most people find natural materials such as cotton, linen and even bamboo to be the most comfortable bed sheets, but it all comes down to personal preference as to which bed sheets are the most comfortable.

Caring For Your New Bed Sheets

New sheets should always be washed before being used to remove any dirt or irritants accumulated during the manufacturing and packaging processes. An initial washing will also make the new sheets feel softer and more comfortable the first time they are used. Clean your bed sheets regularly and often. Once in use, sheets will need washing a minimum of every seven to ten days. During hot and humid summer nights or if you tend to perspire at night, even more frequent laundering is recommended. People with sensitive skin should take care to wash microfiber bed sheets and your average sheets with mild detergents that do not contain artificial scents or other chemical additives. Replace your bed sheets every two years. High quality sheets can last a long time, but after a while the fibers will begin to break down and even the best bed sheets will start to look and feel worn. Newer bed sheets and pillowcases are easier to clean and maintain, and will provide a more comfortable night’s sleep.
