SLEEP TIPS FOR COUPLES

There are many factors that help create a great relationship whether it's communication, spending quality time together, equally dividing tasks or managing your money well. But for some couples, even though they've come close to perfecting their day-to-day, waking lives together; they may still face some real troubles when it comes to sharing a bed at night.

A 2005 study by the non-profit advocacy group National Sleep Foundation found that more than a quarter of co-habiting American adults lose sleep because of their partner's sleep issues and nearly one in four adults spend the night in separate beds or bedrooms. Frequent problems that can create disturbances between sleep partners include insomnia, sleep apnea, different sleep-wake schedules, aggressive tossing and turning and sleep talking.

Here are some sleep tips for couples:

  1. Couples who suspect one or both partners have a serious sleep disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnea should consult a physician.
  2. Your child should sleep in his or her own room. More than 12% of married adults with children report typically sleeping with a child; a vast majority of these adults (81%) report having a sleep problem.

  4. For couples that wake up at different times every morning, the earlier riser should purchase a vibrating alarm clock that fits beneath the pillow.
