SIT 'N SLEEP'S TOP TEN SLEEP TIPS FOR 2012

Sit 'n Sleep has teamed up with Dr. Peter Fotinakes, Medical Director of the Sleep Disorders Center at St. Joseph's Hospital and Diplomat to the American Board of Sleep Medicine and Neurology, and created a list of the top 10 things you can do to sleep better into the New Year:

Did you know that 92% of Americans won't keep their New Year's Resolution? This year, instead of vowing to attain the impossible, make one simple resolution that has the power to change your life for the better: resolve to sleep better.

  1. Get Into a Routine:* When you have a routine, your body learns what to expect and will respond when it is time to wake up, go to bed, eat, etc.
  2. Create a Relaxing Sleep Space:* Once routines are set, it is important to create a sleep space that is relaxing. For example, televisions, computers, and other distractions should stay out of the bedroom.
  3. Invest in Your Sleep Space:* Get a mattress that suits your body and its unique needs. Sit n' Sleep has proprietary Body Diagnostic technology that takes thousands of measurements of a customer to find the perfect mattress fit for each person. If your mattress is over eight years old, it is time to replace it.
  4. Stop Allergies Before They Start:* Invest in a mattress and box spring dust mite protector kit if your indoor allergies keep you up at night and impact your ability to get a good night's sleep. 2/3rds of all Americans have some type of indoor allergies and mattress protectors will eliminate the main cause which is dust mites, allowing you to be sniffle free at night.
  5. Get Enough ZZZs:* Once you have a relaxing, sleep-worthy space and a routine set, it is imperative that you dedicate seven to eight full hours to sleep per night. Any less and you are cheating your body of necessary recharge time to operate at 100%.
  6. Eat Right:* Healthy eating is an imperative part of you and your child's routines and continued productivity. Numerous studies link proper nutrition and children's performance in school, so ensure your kids eat a healthy breakfast and have fruits and vegetables included in their school lunch.
  7. Exercise:* Hitting the gym will not only help out with your 'lose the weight' New Year's resolution, it is also proven to help you get a better night's sleep!
  8. Drink Enough Water:* Well over half of our body is made up of water, so it's vital to drink plenty to keep your body functioning optimally.
  9. Get Your Partner's Sleep Habits Under Control:* If your partner snores, has sleep apnea, or is an otherwise disruptive sleeper, address the situation before it has severe effects on both of your sleep and well-being.
  10. Keep it Up!* It's easy to make a plan, but not always so easy to follow through. Make it your main goal this year to get a full, restful night's sleep every time your head hits the pillow.

"While many Americans can only dream of getting the recommended eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, it's important to understand that sleep health affects overall well being. The quality of your sleep is as important as the quantity, which makes a healthy night's rest a perfect and attainable New Year's resolution for 2012," said Dr. Fotinakes. "It's particularly important during cold and flu season to be getting a restful night of sleep since it helps strengthen the body's immune system. And, in addition to reducing stimulation and other outside factors impacting sleep, I counsel our patients to strongly consider how their mattress is affecting overall sleep health. The quality of the mattress (how old is it? How firm or soft? etc.) are all critical factors in how you sleep."
