Traditional vs. Pocket Coils

Most people are familiar with the traditional coil technology used in standard innerspring mattresses, where the coils are wired together to create an integrated framework for support. When you put your weight on one side of the bed, the linked coils transfer your weight to rest of the bed so that the mattress doesn’t sag when you sleep. In contrast, pocket coils are individually enclosed in a fabric sleeve, with space in between to provide less weight transfer and more individualized support.

Also known as wrapped coils or encased coils, pocketed coils are engineered to provide excellent support while suppressing motion transfer between sleeping partners. Individually wrapping the springs in separate fabric encasements enables each pocketed spring to move independently and conform to the unique contours of your body. During sleep, the heavier portions of your body sink further while the rest of the mattress provides more lift to the center of your torso. This results in a more balanced support and a more comfortable sleep.

The Advantages of A Coil Mattress

Pocket coil mattresses are rapidly becoming one of the most popular types of mattress as sleepers become aware of their many advantages over traditional innerspring coils.

  • Excellent comfort and support. Pocket coils combine the strong support of innersprings, with the weightless, buoyant feel of foam mattresses.
  • Minimal motion transfer.  Like foam support systems, pocket coil mattresses do not transfer motion, allowing you to sleep soundly without being disturbed whenever your partner moves.
  • Strong pressure relief. A wrapped coil support system relieves pressure by absorbing weight and pushing back to instantly conform to your body. By evenly distributing your weight while adjusting to the shape of your body, the pocketed coil mattress virtually eliminates pressure points that can cause you to toss and turn at night.
  • Easy to use. A coil mattress tends to be lightweight, very cool, and does not need to be turned to maintain its sleep performance.
