You’ve done your research and decided on the size, type of construction and comfort level of the new mattress you plan to buy. When it comes to sleeping well, however, there’s more to it than just the mattress. The underlying support can be just as important as the mattress itself in providing a good night’s sleep. At Sit ‘n Sleep, we’ll help you choose the best type of bed for your particular situation.
The four most common mattress support systems are box springs, foundation supports, platforms and adjustable beds. Just as there’s no “one size fits all” mattress, the same is true for the boxspring and bedframe that will support it, since not all mattresses are compatible with every type of bed or bed frame.
What are Box Springs and How Are They Different from Bed Frames?
Box Springs use a series of evenly spaced, heavy gauge wire coils contained within a wooden box for supporting mattresses. The box springs and mattress are placed on a wood or metal bed frame that keeps them off the floor and away from the colder air. Best when used with an innerspring mattress, box springs help absorb motion and evenly distribute the weight of the mattress and its sleeper or sleepers. Although box springs can be used with innerspring and memory foam mattresses, they’re not recommended for latex mattresses, since the extra weight of latex may cause the mattress to sag and shorten its useful life.
Here at Sit ‘n Sleep, most of our mattresses, unless otherwise specified, come with a matching box spring. In some cases, the box springs are included in the price of the mattress set – in other cases they are sold alongside the mattress for a separate amount.
Platform Beds are low profile, one-piece bed frames that support mattresses with a series of closely spaced lateral wooden slats and are available for all standard mattress sizes from Twin to California King. They’re the most versatile of the four mattress support systems, since they work with all mattress types, although they tend to work best with foam and gel foam mattresses. The mattress is placed directly on the platform, which eliminates the need for box springs or foundation supports, making platform beds a money-saving choice. When pairing a mattress with a platform bed, it’s important to confirm that the slat widths comply with the manufacturer’s specifications to prevent voiding the mattress’s warranty.
Foundation Beds, like platforms, are one-piece, low profile bed frames used to support mattresses. Foundations look much like box springs, although they’re simply flat surfaces that support the mattress rather than absorb shock and motion and distribute the sleeper’s weight. Many people today are choosing foundations over box spring or platform support systems, due largely to the increasing popularity of memory foam and gel foam construction over innerspring mattresses.
Adjustable Beds have become increasingly popular in recent years as a result of their numerous health, comfort and lifestyle benefits. Adjustable beds are motorized, multi-hinged mattress platforms that allow sleepers to quickly and effortlessly change sleeping positions. Sleepers can independently lift or lower the upper and lower portions of the body and make similar adjustments to find the perfect position for sleeping comfortably. The health benefits of adjustable beds include improved circulation, relief from lower back pain, lessened neck and shoulder tension and reduced swelling of the feet and legs. Adjustable beds are a great choice for people who like to eat, watch television, read or work while in bed. From Twin to California King, regardless of the size bed that interests you, Sit ‘n Sleep’s knowledgeable sleep consultants will explain the benefits of adjustable beds and help you chose a model that will provide give sound, restful sleep for many years to come.
Choosing The Right Bed Frame There’s more involved with selecting a new mattress than just choosing its size, comfort level and cost. You’ll also need a quality bed frame to extend the life of the mattress and provide the support needed for sound and restful sleep. To give your bedroom a personal touch, add a decorative headboard to the frame. From basic metal bed frames to steel-framed platform supports and bed beam bed frames, Sit ’n Sleep’s conveniently located Southern California Sleep Centers have them all from name-brand manufacturers at affordable prices.
Select the Right Size Bed for Your Bedroom Size does matter. More time is spent in the bedroom than any other part of the house, which make it important that the dimensions of the bed and frame fit comfortably within the room, while still leaving enough space to add furniture and accessories. A bed that’s too large for the room will result in a cramped, closed-in feeling, and take up precious space needed for nightstands, a dresser, storage chest or similar accessories. From standard twin beds to king sized mattresses and frames, you’ll find the right combination for your room size and sleeping preferences at Sit ’n Sleep.
Whether you’re interested in a box spring, platform, foundation or an adjustable bed base, you’ll find them all at one of Sit ‘n Sleep’s 38 conveniently located Southern California outlets.
As of 12/30/2015, California state law requires retailers to collect an $11 recycling fee on each mattress and each box spring sold. (I.E. A recycling fee of $22 must be assessed for the purchase of one mattress with one box spring.) The amount of the fee was mandated by the state and is not set by individual retailers. See the details of the recycling fee in California.
